Mystery Science Theater 3000

Mystery Science Theater 3000 has been a show close to my heart, ever since I spent time with my equally sarcastic sister watching hours and hours of tapes and DVDs way back in high school. In a nutshell, MST3K (the acronym by which it's known) was a show back in the 90's on comedy central that made enormous fun of old Hollywood B movies. If you love camp, you'll love this show.

The series lasted ten seasons, and was named one of the 100 best television shows of all time by Time magazine. You can find much of it on DVD, distributed by Rhino. I've been watching the DVD set I brought to Malaysia (a Christmas gift from my sister, Jaclyn), and coincidentally have run across several interesting developments regarding the cast of the show.

The show featured two main hosts: the creator, Joel Hodgson, and his eventual replacement Mike Nelson. Both have recently taken creative ventures along the same avenue as the original show, much to long-time fans' jubilation.

Mike Nelson started Rifftrax, a website that sells MP3's of him and several other MST comedians "riffing" along with movies. The idea is that you sync the audio from your stereo as you play the movie normally. For $2.99 a piece, and with the ability to riff new and popular movies, the site is taking off. I mean, who hasn't wanted to make shameless fun of Point Break. The site has also begun featuring guest riffers like Neil Patrick Harris and Fred Willard (of Best in Show fame).

Joel Hodgson has recently reappeared in a MST3K-veined comedic endeavor called Cinematic Titanic. He's brought with him much of the original cast of the show (which gives MST3K fans that tingly feeling), and his first DVD entitled The Oozing Skull has gotten rave reviews. Seems like something I might like for my birthday!
