No Title

some days I need a softer moment
and I know places, holes and heights
with a faint breeze or quiet expectation
where aloneness is alone but not lonely.
thermals and rank mud are pathways
to living or to dying (as it were)
to peril or prosperity in turn
for those to whom there can be no god.
and I think some peace can be found
lurking in the truth and hush of it.

Fun With Numbers

State Population (est. 2007)

Wyoming 522,830
Vermont 621,254
North Dakota 639,715
Alaska 683,478
South Dakota 796,214
Delaware 864,764
Montana 957,861
Hawaii 1,283,388
New Hampshire 1,315,828
Maine 1,317,207
Idaho 1,499,402

Total 10,501,941

Michigan(total) 10,071,822

As of a 2006 estimate, the population of the Upper Peninsula was 312,153 in 16,452 square miles of land.

As of a 2007 estimate, the population of Wyoming was 522,830 in 97,818 square miles of land.

The UP holds what would be 60% of the population of Wyoming in what would be 17% of Wyoming’s total land (by sq. mile). Yoopers are not as alone as they think they are.

Michigan unemployment rate as of March, 2008 - 360,000 people.

That’s like if one of the following cities-Wichita, Kansas (357,698); Raleigh, North Carolina (356,321); St. Louis, Missouri (353,837); Cincinnati, Ohio (332,252); Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (312,819)-shut down completely, and then some.

Or, if you want to compare Michigan to Michigan-that’s like making the collected population of Grand Rapids (193,083), Flint (117,068), Bay City (34,449), and then some (15,400) one-hundred percent unemployed (this does not include these city’s surrounding townships or suburbs).

Or, if you want to look at it another way, that’s like making the entire population of the Upper Peninsula unemployed.

To end on a lighter note, the number of inland lakes in Michigan exceeds 11,000.

The number of inland lakes in Minnesota (over ten acres) is about 11,842.

I think we should thumb wrestle Minnesota for their state motto, just for the hell of it.
