Here's the amazing unboxing!

The mouse is for reference. It's pretty big compared to the G9 and even some other SLR's, but it is still dwarfed by giant powertools like the D3 or 1D Mk-3.

Here's the back.

I ordered the Pentax FA 50mm F1.4 lens. It's fixed (no zoom), but the optics are better than a kit lens and F1.4 means I can shoot clearer, sharper images indoors. Here are a couple of sample shots I took just around the apartment. Keep in mind these are indoors at ISO 100, which is really, really freaking cool.

Beasty puppy. Vegetative cat?

Erin doesn't like when I photograph her, but she's so pretty I can hardly stand it.

I've started out with manual focus, and I'll explain why. One of the most appealing aspects of choosing Pentax was that the lens mount has remained the same for over twenty years. That means there are plenty of excellent used lenses to purchase. The downside is that they might not have automatic focus or metering, so I will have to learn to do those by myself. Now seems like a good time to start.

just curious, why pentax?
There were a couple of reasons:
-the K20D has the same or better image quality than the Canon 40D or 50D, both of which are far more expensive
-it is fully weather sealed
-it has image stabilization in the camera body, instead of in the lenses; lens stabilization makes each lens very expensive
-pentax has used like three lens mounts EVER, so you have access to a huge amount of used, great lenses from the past that will work with the camera right away
also, the new lenses are very economically priced even though they match the image quality of canon or nikon lenses.
