The "homosexual agenda" infomercial: apply palm directly to forehead

Right here in your home town, the American Family Association is planning to broadcast an hour long infomercial on the dangers of the homosexual agenda, and how helpless Christians are silenced in opposing it! I know, the horror. In an attempt to prove itself as culturally backwards as the rich, while, staunch evangelical community that has always formed the backbone of Grand Rapids (I would submit, until recently), Wood TV has considered airing the program again after deciding initially against it. The Grand Rapids Press has written an article about the program and the community response. Here's a tidy excerpt:

In a letter promoting the program, the American Family Association asserts that most Americans get their "information about the homosexual movement from the secular news media and Hollywood, which not only support but promote the gay agenda. What people know is tainted by pro-homosexual propaganda."

...

Kniowski said the station is offering a time slot for Saturday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. but had not received a decision from the sponsor.

"If the show airs, we will have disclaimers at the beginning and end of the show stating that these are not the opinions or views of this station."

I would encourage you all to send a letter to the station management of Wood TV (just click the link to them above to take you right to their contact page) if you feel this is a ridiculous program that doesn't belong on our community airwaves. Below is the text of mine:

Hello,

As a local viewer I am writing to express my disappointment at your continued consideration of the American Family Association's hour-long presentation on what they call "The Homosexual Agenda". Please understand that while you certainly have the legal right to broadcast this program, me and my family will cease to tune into your station if it is aired- and we won't be the only ones.

While broadcasting is a commercial enterprise, it still nonetheless is permitted to exist by the people, who concluded long ago that there was some responsibility towards the public good in it. It is the feeling of myself and others that, while you may "disclaim" agreement with the views expressed in the program, your decision to broadcast it implies a complicity with those views and an indifference towards their effect on the community.

Sincerely,
Jared Lynem

UPDATE: It appears Wood TV has decided not to broadcast the program:

In a statement Wednesday, WOOD/WOTV/WXSP General Manager Diane Kniowski said the offer is now off the table.

"We made a gesture of the 2-3 p.m. Saturday time period. It's been 24 hours and we had no response," Kniowski said. "Our station is being bombarded with calls and messages, and we find ourselves in the middle of someone else's fight. Ours was a fair offer and we are removing ourselves from this matter."

We were just talking about this last night (at church, ironically enough) and were just shocked that one--someone would feel the need to make this and two--a station would actually consider airing it. Thank goodness Channel 8 woke up.

This is unbelievable - I thought we (as a society) got past this issue a long time ago... guess not.

Have you seen Milk? Great movie!

@jessy we will, eventually. Or as much as anything else, anyway.

I haven't seen Milk, but it's definitely going on my netflix queue!
