Novac Djokovic won the Australian Open 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The intensity was memorable. My adrenaline was up! I really thought Tsonga could do it after he won the first set coolly. He played a great game, but the pressure really brought out his inexperience in the last set, and he grew frustrated and inaccurate. Djokovic was a monster, surviving the physical and mental punishment Tsonga was dealing out and channeling it right back.
Djokovic lost in the US Open finals in September, and I think couldn't quite brush that chip off his shoulder since. He was not very gracious after winning in the semi's over Roger Federer, but the way he received his trophy tonight definitely reflected a release of all the tensions and stressful expectations. In the end, both players showed friendliness and class, which is always nice to see.
I am anticipating seeing a lot more of Tsonga, though. It will be interesting to watch what he can do in the French Open, in his home country and with the momentum and experience of this tournament on his side.
