Palm oil is the #1 agricultural export of Malaysia, and Malaysia is the worlds leading producer of it. Many, many acres of forest were cleared to install rubber plantations years ago, which were replaced with palm oil plantations later when prices for palm oil skyrocketed. Currently there is an argument about the net effect of the plantations on the environment, with the Malaysian government apparently arguing it's financial interests.
