THE PLANE TAKES OFF!!!!

w00t! If you've been privy to the giant physics flamewar revolving around the "myth" that a plane on a treadmill can still take off normally, here are the results of Mythbusters' latest epsiode, courtesy of a live blog from kottke.org. THE PLANE TAKES OFF. I know it's hard to believe and I didn't believe it myself until I thought about it and discussed it with Erin.

Erin was inspired by the results and now has a new desktop background:

Holy crap, kottke.org has about the dumbest discussion ever on why it takes off. Makes me want to slit my wrists knowing there exists physicists that can be that dumb. There are pages of discussion on people arguing yes/no, one camp saying the question implies no foward motion relative to the air and the other saying there is forward motion of the plane relative to the air. Only thing is, this is pointed out and yet they still both argue their respective sides as if they're each answering the same question.

@phil: you should have seen the Mythbuster's official forum. It was even worse!
